Va. man charged in home improvement scams

A 42-year-old Alexandria man has been charged with several crimes related to home improvement scams in Montgomery County.

Karl Leroy Davis has been charged with failing to perform a contract, operating without a license, and two theft charges, Montgomery County police said.

Authorities said Davis would meet with his prospective clients and discuss a work plan with them before signing contractual agreement.

After the contract was signed, Davis was given a check that he cashed immediately, police said. They said Davis did not do any work, and that when clients contacted him, he did not respond.

Police said Davis is a suspect in four incidents in Rockville, Silver Spring, and Gaithersburg and that authorities believe there may be more.

To avoid becoming a victim of home improvement scams, authorities recommend getting at least three estimates from licensed contractors and asking for references.

Police are asking anyone with information or who believes they may have been a victim to contact Officer Hedgepeth, Montgomery County Police 4th District, at 240-773-5500. Callers may remain anonymous.
