Virginia couple faces child abduction charges, police say

A man and woman in Virginia are facing child abduction charges after refusing to surrender custody of their daughter Thursday afternoon.

Police said that Jennifer Dawn Carwile, 35, and Eric Eugene Black, 41, were supposed to hand over 1-year-old Alexis Rose Carwile to child protective service workers in Halifax County, near the border with North Carolina.

Instead, police say the couple abducted the girl around 4:30 p.m. Thursday from a relative’s home in the 1000 block of Lower Liberty Road in Halifax.

An Amber Alert was issued for the couple and child, who were believed to be heading for the Washington, D.C. area, police said.

The Amber Alert indicated that police believed the girl was in “extreme danger.”

The search for all three ended safely early Friday morning in the Richmond area.

Black was found first, in Chesterfield, Va., with the station wagon the couple had used in the alleged abduction.

Carwile was found a short time later in Prince George, Va., with Alexis Rose, who police said had not been harmed.

Black and Carwile have been arrested and face abduction charges, police said.

Police did not say why Alexis Rose was being placed in protective custody.
