Police: Woman, 21, dies when brother’s car hits tree

A 27-year-old Burke man’s sister died early Monday when he lost control of his car while driving under the influence of alcohol, Fairfax County police said.

Hossein Ghaffari-Nik was driving a Mitsubishi Eclipse on Shirley Gate Road near Mattie Moore Court shortly before 4 a.m. when he struck the left lane curb and lost control, according to Officer Don Gotthardt, Fairfax County police spokesman.

The car veered to the right, hit a large tree, spun, and hit a second tree on the driver's side, Gotthardt said.

Ghaffari-Nik’s sister, Sara Ghaffari-Nik, 21, was in the back seat. She was not wearing a seat belt, and the impact of the crash threw her out of the car, Gotthardt said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hossein Ghaffari-Nik has been arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and manslaughter, police said.
