Woman ID’d in KFC crash

Police have identified the woman who was killed Monday night when her car plowed into a Landover Kentucky Fried Chicken as 29-year-old Hellena Louise Smith, authorities said Tuesday.

Smith, police said, was speeding along Martin Luther King Jr. Highway when she lost control of her car, went over the curb and crashed into the KFC itself and another vehicle that was backing out of a parking space. Smith was ejected from the car and pronounced dead on scene in the 6700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Highway, police said.

Two other people — a passenger in Smith’s BMW and the man who was backing his vehicle out — were also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Cpl. Larry Johnson, a Prince George’s County police spokesman, said investigators believe speed was a factor in the crash and also are investigating whether alcohol may have been a factor.
