First it was, then it wasn’t...we’re confused

We wanted to do a preemptive post to let readers know that they didn’t have to get into Gripe mode about the Chain Bridge being closed today (not by the District Department of Transportation at least) after seeing a tweet from DDOT stating as much.

Then things got confusing.

Traffic Alert: despite what u might have read on a VA road sign: DDOT is not closing the Chain Bridge tomorrow.less than a minute ago via TweetDeck Favorite Retweet Reply

Traffic alert: VDOT confirms they DO plan to CLOSE Chain Bridge 9:30-2:30 today for tree work. Use alternate routes.less than a minute ago via UberSocial Favorite Retweet Reply

Update: VDOT now reports Chain Bridge will NOT be closed today. The closure is in 400 blk of Chain Bridge Rd (RT 123) on VA sideless than a minute ago via TweetDeck Favorite Retweet Reply

The last two tweets were dispatched today. Can you follow the conversation as the bridge went from being maybe not closed to open to ... you get the point:

“I don’t know [whose] sign it is or why it says the bridge will be closed,” said John Lisle, a spokesman for the department, yesterday after we inquired about the tweet via e-mail. “DDOT has no plans to close the bridge but it is possible that Arlington County, VDOT, or a utility will be doing work on or near the bridge that might restrict access. So far, I have not been able to confirm that.”

Real-time Twitter updates save commuters yet again.
