You may have missed my colleague Lonnae O’Neal Parker’s terrific piece on Gabriel Benn, which ran over the holidays. If you did, be sure to read it here. It describes Benn’s parallel life as hip-hop artist Asheru and how it has shaped his approach as an educator working with some of the city’s most vulnerable kids. Benn, director of arts integration at Ballou’s Arts and Technology Academy—formerly the Transition Academy@Shadd—is one of the many remarkable, and too often unsung, heroes in DCPS.
