D.C. school voucher applications available Saturday

Families interested in applying for D.C. Opportunity Scholarships to private schools can do so from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Renaissance Hotel, 999 Ninth Street N.W. The program, revived and expanded by Congress this spring, will have more than 1,000 scholarships available, according to the D.C. Children & Youth Investment Trust Corp., which is organizing the event.

The program provides vouchers of up to $12,000 for low-income children to attend participating private schools. Students from District families earning less than 185 percent of the poverty level ($41,348 for a family of four in 2011) or currently receiving SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits are eligible to participate.
