Airport D.C. United Conversation No. 1: Nick Rimando

Talked to D.C. United goalkeeper and former Water Wars star Nick Rimando today while he was in the airport, set to jet off to Montego Bay for midfielder Ben Olsen's Saturday wedding. Honestly, instead of sending me to the Gil Zero launch in New York, a better use of the Washington Post's travel budget might have been to send me to Jamaica for Ben Olsen's wedding. Not sure how I lost that fight.

Point being, we'll hopefully get a full after-action report, but since Olsen performed the marriage ceremony for Rimando and Jacqui Little almost exactly a year ago, I wondered whether Rimando would be returning the favor.

"No, no, no, no, absolutely not," Nicky said this morning. (Although actually, forget "Nicky," he was still referring to himself as "The Goose" when we spoke.) "My role's gonna be to stand there, hang out and look pretty, that's it....The only reason we chose Benny is because he has the personality to get away with it. Me, I would stumble around up there, I would mess it up. I'm not going to mess up Benny's wedding, I'm just going to be as simple as I can."

He did give me some nice details, though. The wedding ceremony will apparently take place on some Jamaican cliffs. The marriage will apparently be performed by "some Rasta guy from Jamaica," if Nicky is to be believed." The post-ceremony music will apparently include a Jamaican steel band. The temperatures will apparently be high of 87, low of 79. Benny's brother Jeremy will apparently be the best man. The men in the wedding party, of which Nicky is a member, will apparently wear white shirts and white pin-striped khakis with white Chuck Taylor sneakers, although Benny is still attempting to convince the other men to turn the khakis into cut-off shorts.

No tuxedos, I asked?

"Absolutely not," Nicky said. "He wants us to dress like him, pretty much. I don't think he'd be caught dead with a tuxedo, unless someone put a gun to his head."

Nicky said Ben's typical casual attire is cut-off sweats, Nike's and a hoodie. When he wants to look nice, he turns to "probably some cut khakis or jeans, Chuck Taylors and maybe an old flannel," Nicky said. So needless to say, we're expecting the attire this weekend to be "Very Casual."

Aside from Rimando, the list of scheduled attendees includes current DCU players Brandon Prideaux and Jaime Moreno, former DCU players Mike Petke, Santino Quaranta, Judah Cooks, Chris Albright and Antonio Otero, PR person Doug Hicks and trainer Brian Goodstein, which will allow Rimando to continue his treatment while in the Caribbean.

"Treatment with a beer in my hand," he specified.

As to whether any pick-up soccer games will break out, "everybody would probably fall on their face if we tried to kick a soccer ball," Nicky said. "And there's no running around the pool. That's a no-go. People probably don't even want to see a soccer balll when they're in Jamaica."

Like I said, hopefully we'll be able to provide the full post-wedding report next week.
