Black History Month: JT II on Lincoln Theatre, Ben's

Sports Producer Lindsay Applebaum:

Comcast SportsNet has some video of John Thompson, Jr. walking down U Street with son Ron in honor of Black History Month.

It's a great sort of mini-history lesson, touching on segregation, the 1960's riots and Martin Luther King, Jr., but it's certainly not without a few lighter moments. Some highlights:

JT II claims that the expression "finger lickin' good" originates from Ben's Chili Bowl ("I don't know where these other people got it from") and greets people inside the iconic restaurant like he owns the place ("What's up baby, how you doin'? How you doin', lady? Yeah.").

As they approach the Lincoln Theatre, Ron asks his father how much it cost back in the day to see a movie there.

"Fifty cents."

"Fifty cents to go to a movie?!"

"Fifty cents or someone holds the back door. ... Somebody go in there first, and after they went in, you know, they just happen to stick the toes in the doorway-"

"Well for fifty cents, why you gotta stick your toe in the door?"

"Fifty cents, boy, you gotta be crazy."

Good stuff. Click here to watch.
