Blake DeChristopher’s beard

The Virginia Tech media corps has written countless articles and blog posts about the beard of Blake DeChristopher. But I never have, and one reader demanded, based on my beat history, that I pay homage to perhaps the best patch of facial hair in the Washington Post’s coverage area.

So here is DeChristopher, with Frank Beamer, at some event honoring the Hokies’ seniors, via BeamerBall.com.

And here are some of the many beard quotes that have come out this season.

“I don’t know if it’ll let me cut it. It’ll probably slap me,” he said this week, via Nathan Warters. “I told coach Beamer I was going to shave it for when we go get the (Jacobs Blocking) Trophy on Friday, that little ceremony, and he said, ‘No way. It’s lucky for us.’ ”

“He’s always combing it around the house and stuff, shampooing it,” his roommate Jaymes Brooks told the Virginian-Pilot. “It’s sickening.”

“Beard plays a great role; it’s where all my strength comes from,” he told my colleague Mark Giannotto.

“I have a weak chin, so this beard kind of covers it,” he told Darryl Slater.

“The Beard has become a part of me,” he told the Collegiate Times. “Some nights I’ll just stare at it in the mirror to give it some attention — in case it hasn’t had enough that day. I’ll look at it so it feels loved.”
