Bryce Harper’s boring eye black

(Toni L. Sandys - THE WASHINGTON POST)
Bryce Harper’s fancy eye black patterns were once a standard part of Bryce Harper stories, like when Jeff Passan called it “a decorative attention magnet.”

Harper lost the Ultimate Warrior look when he joined the Nats, but he still applied the stuff, even using sunglasses as a mirror while in the dugout to do the job properly.

The most acclaimed hitting prodigy in baseball takes the field with two thick globs of eye black,” the New York Daily News wrote last summer.

Bryce Harper — red wrist bands, white shoes, batting gloves, eye-black as thick as Avril Lavigne’s,” a Canadian correspondent wrote around the same time.

And so here is the eye black that took the field for the Nats over the weekend. It’s kind of boring. But it’s definitely still there, and still black.
