This was what the Capitals banners looked like in October, when the latest Southeast Division flag went into the Verizon Center rafters, via District Sports Page.
And this is what the Capitals banners looked like on Wednesday, when the team was shut out at home, and fans noticed a couple of new pieces of cloth in the rafters.
“Unless I missed the addition previously, it would seem we’ve added two new banners to the rafters on F Street tonight,” the team’s radio man, John Walton, wrote on Twitter.
“Really?” asked Horn Guy, one of the team’s best known fans, who sent out the above image.
“Hopefully these banners come down sooner than later and the next one that gets raised says “Stanley Cup Champions” on it,” Capitals Outsider wrote.
“If we ran the Verizon Center, we’d adhere to the late Red Auerbach’s guidelines for banners: championships only,” SB Nation DC decreed.
While some fans were being mildly outraged online, others were cautioning against outrage; pointing out, for example, that both the Red Wings and the Stars, among others, have celebrated No. 1 conference seeds. This image, for example, comes via @Hesnider.
Still, the general sentiment seemed to be the fewer banners for anything other than the real title, the better.
