First in a three-part Monday morning series on personalities your typical D.C. sports fan doesn't like much.
So longtime Bog reader JDP e-mailed me a few weeks back and said he heard Bob Knight doing an interview about this upcoming Guitar Hero commercial he had filmed for use during the NCAA tournament. As JDP recalled it, Knight said the commercial also starred Coach K and Gary Williams.
Wait, Gary jamming on a toy guitar with his ACC nemesis? That's good stuff, right? So I called Guitar Hero manufacturer Activision and one of its ad agencies during the ACC tourney, hoping to give them some free advance publicity. Four phone conversations and several un-returned e-mails and phone messages later, I realized they really didn't need my publicity.
Later, of course, I realized the ad starred Roy Williams, not Gary Williams. Silly blog readers. No wonder Activision had no interest in talking to me about the King of Garyland. And thus, the above spot immediately went from "charming video featuring a gruff-but-lovable D.C. sports personality playfully stepping out of his normal persona at the end of one of the most trying seasons of his career" to "30-second vehicle for making fun of Coach K." Crazy how things change like that.
Oh, and for the record, Coach K was 0-3 against this year's Final Four. Gary Williams was 2-1. Just if you were wondering.
(And yeah, if someone sends me a similar clip starring Gary Williams dancing in his underwear, this immediately becomes wondrously funny and charming again.)
