After Michelle Obama accompanied the first-pitch pitcher to the mound on Tuesday night, she hugged the first-pitch catcher, Danny Espinosa. All the beat writers made mention of it, and of Espinosa’s post-game explanation of their conversation.

“I just said, ‘No Chicago hats next time,’ ” Espinosa awesomely said.

But this, I feel compelled to point out, wasn’t just a perfunctory hug. I mean, there was eye contact and emotion and some real chemistry there. Gotta figure he earned at least one Rookie of the Year vote on Tuesday, right?

“All she said was: ‘You guys have done a great job, and we’ve seen that you guys have really started to make some things happen,’” Espinosa also said, via MLB.com. “A couple compliments, which was nice.”

Seemed like a nice conversation.

Although at least one legendary Nats pitcher wasn’t all that starstruck by the celebrity drop-in.
