Since I just recently mentioned that Dmitri Young is back in the baseball swing of things as a consultant and hitting instructor with the independent Oakland County Cruisers of the Frontier League, figured I needed to pass along this story. It comes from a recent Dmitri appearance on Sirius XM's MLB Network Radio, and it's not the sort of stuff that happens with the Nats. Or at least, the 2010 Nats. This totally would have happened last year.
Young: "The bus driver, the old bus driver I should say, stole the bus and the team had to basically show and go. They drove from Michigan all the way to outside of Cleveland, that's like a three-and-a-half hour drive. They got here about 30 minutes before the game. We lost 3 to 2 last night but there was a lot of heart for those kids being on the bus. They were supposed to be here about 1 o'clock in the afternoon but, like I said, long bus story I can tell on another day."
Rob Dibble: "That's a rough league when the bus driver steals the bus!"
Jim Memolo: "That's a baseball movie right there. The bus driver stole the bus?!"
Young: "It happened [Tuesday]! This is real life stuff here! Hook me up to a polygraph, it's going to say 'truth' all across it!"
The bus was later recovered by police in Detroit. Kids, don't grow up to be hitting instructors in the Frontier League.
