Esky's Blog

This athlete blogging thing is really out of control. Bobby Boswell is chiming in from Mexico about his teammates and their arm-wrestling competitions, for example. And, wouldn't you know, a former teammate was inspired to start a blog of his own. And to give it one of the greatest names of all time. I mean, "Kickin' It, With Alecko Eskandarian?" Doesn't get much better than that.

Sources inside D.C. United think Esky was motivated out of some sort of Bobby jealousy, but Esky told me it was more about Gilbert Arenas, believe it or not. "I read Gilbert Arenas's blog all day today and was crackin up, but I think I have better stories to tell, minus the celebrity friends and multi million dollar sponsors and photo shoots," he wrote me. "Totally 100% inspired by Gilbert." Whatever. He wants to be BobbyBoswell, that's obvious.

I will say that both men have a solid grasp of the blogging medium, solid enough that I was again looking at job ads last night. Esky's introductory stories include his tale of organizing the Toronto FC NCAA pool, a discussion of "the long lost art of van racing," the story of a teammate stealing a McDonald's gift card and passing it off on Esky who then tried to use it nearly causing an international incident, and the use of the word "eh." Wonder how long before Toronto FC goes all NBA.com on Esky and starts editing out parts of his blog. First month, I'd guess.

Finally, I will also say that this whole "professional soccer players and their various hijinks" thing seems to be a pretty well saturated market by this point, so if Devon McTavish is still considering launching his own blog, I'd advise against it.
