Greivis Vasquez on Gary Williams’s retirement

I’ve written so many blog posts about how much Greivis Vasquez loves Gary Williams — see here and here and here and here — that I’d feel weird if Williams retired and I didn’t quote Greivis on how much he loves his coach.

“Wow, man, when I heard about Coach Williams [retiring] I was really shocked,” Vasquez told Comcast SportsNet on Thursday. “I couldn’t believe it. But I support him 100 percent. My coach, I love my coach, man, I will always love him and support him no matter what. I think he’s one of those coaches that is gonna be hard to replace. It’s gonna be a hard transition for us, but we’ll get there again.”

Then Chick Hernandez asked how much Williams had helped Vasquez’s development.

“Coach Williams did so much for me,” Vasquez said. “Playing there for four years, understanding my role and figuring out what type of player I was gonna be really helped me to play at the highest level. I think Coach Williams was always the type of guy, that I don’t care what anybody say, he can always get it done with any type of player....

I mean, the numbers don’t lie. He won a championship, went to two Final Fours, won the ACC Tournament, ACC regular season. I mean, he did so much for the school. It’s gonna be really hard for a lot of fans and people at Maryland to just let this man go. He was unbelievable. What a career. ”
