Jake Peavy, Jeff Francoeur on shutting down Stephen Strasburg

(Jonathan Newton - WASHINGTON POST)
We’ve heard from the Nationals on shutting down Stephen Strasburg. We’ve heard from Strasburg. We’ve heard from his teammates. We’ve even heard from every media personality who has ever had an opinion on anything.

But all of that chatter doesn’t matter. The real question is, what does Chicago White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy think?

“I don’t want to put words in their mouth what their veterans are thinking, but it would be very hard for me as a veteran player to accept that,” Peavy told Bob Nightengale of USA Today. “It would just blow my mind thinking that the Nationals are going to the playoffs and Stephen Strasburg not being part of it? He’s arguably the best pitcher in the game. Don’t you want to seize the moment?”

We absolutely do. What say you, Kansas City outfielder Jeff Francoeur?

“If you’re the Nationals, and those fans have been grinding away with their support,’’ said Francoeur. “Don’t you want to make the playoffs? Guys like [Ryan] Zimmerman who have been there a long time, how can you say it’s fair?”

“You’re telling Strasburg that once you get to 180 innings, go ahead and enjoy October from the bench?” Francoeur continued. “Just shoot me.”

I know, right? I mean, a pitcher with an innings limit is like a race horse with a broken leg. Take him out back and put him out of his misery.

To Peavy again!

“I just can’t imagine being a player on this team, and say, ‘We’re going to the playoffs. Chris Sale is healthy and intact, and we’re not going to pitch him.’...I feel for those [Nationals] guys.’”

The Nats have four pitchers not named Strasburg who sit on the top of the list of the best pitchers in baseball. No need to “feel for those guys.”
