I saw the headlines on Wednesday about Phoenix Mercury guard Ketia Swanier’s nasty bleeding-eye injury, but didn’t realize that the elbowing culprit was none other than ex-Terp Kristi Toliver.
The hero of Maryland’s national championship run, Toliver — now with the Los Angeles Sparks — launched a fairly non-descript looking elbow in Swanier’s direction, but connected in a bad way, earning Toliver a flagrant foul, sending Swanier to the deck and landing Toliver a headline on the Huffington Post. “It was a bad one to her eye; her eye was bleeding,” Mercury coach Corey Gaines said, via the AP. “It was a bad one to her eye; her eye was bleeding,” Mercury coach Corey Gaines said. “Anytime you get hit in the eye, it’s dangerous.”
Then two-time MVP Diana Taurasi yelled at Toliver, and then the Mercury turned a 10-point deficit into a 19-point win.
