No, we don’t really cover Longwood athletics around these parts, but hey, it is in Virginia, and everyone loves a good “new mascot images” item.
Plus, ol’ Horse was introduced during a women’s soccer game against Howard, which is local and stuff.
“The new Longwood Mascot was enthusiastically received during its debut,” AD Troy Austin said in a release. “The great energy from the crowd and the night’s events have provided Longwood a great start to the school year.”
Apparently the mission to find a new mascot began in March; two sketches were released in May, and more than 4,300 faculty, alumni, staff and students voted, with this feller winning.
“The mascot is a costumed individual celebrating Longwood school spirit,” the release said. “There is no intention to change the school’s athletics nickname and/or logo.”
The feller’s name will be announced in mid-September. I vote for HORSE.
