Maryland and American wrestle for a championship belt

The area’s two most successful men’s basketball teams won’t play each other, which is stupid.

But the area’s two most successful wrestling programs, at Maryland and American, meet annually. Plus, they now give a Battle of the Beltway belt to the winning school, which is awesome.

The Diamondback student paper described the belt as “a life-size belt, hand-crafted and bejeweled with yellow, pink, purple, green, red and blue sequins and studs.” Maryland Coach Kerry McCoy told the paper that the Terps — who claimed the belt again with a victory last week — would display their prize for a while and then pack it away.

“We talked about getting a belt, like a WWF or WWE or boxing championship belt,” McCoy told the paper. “A lot of football teams have the ax or the trophy or the sledgehammer or whatever that goes back and forth whenever a team wins. So we said, you know, it would be cool if we had this belt and finally last year, one of our alums made it.”

Yes, it is cool. You were right. Images via the Maryland wrestling program. Read more here. More images below.
