Maryland plans color-coded home opener with $30 shirts

College football fan bases have proved they’re able to execute complex color-coded seating arrangements in recent years.

Witness, for example, the tri-color bands pulled off by Boise State last fall, ably turned up by my editor Matt. That’s purty, and the fans didn’t seem to struggle too badly with the logistics.

But I still have my doubts about Maryland’s four-colored color coordination plan for the home opener against Miami, for these reasons.

1) The giant blocks of color don’t seem nearly as distinctive or dramatic as the skinnier section-by-section breakdown.

2) The official t-shirts for the Boise State display cost $9.95. The official t-shirts for the Maryland display cost $29.98. With shipping and tax, your total is $40.62. For a t-shirt. That must be ordered according to a specific section you’re sitting in during one specific game.
