Morning pixels: A tale of two teams

Washington Sports continue to be bad for your health.

After blowing a 2-0 lead in the third period, the Caps won an overtime shootout to come home from Boston with a victory. They lost Chimera to ejection and Vokoun to injury in the process and the win wasn’t pretty, but at this point it doesn’t matter how they come.

It’s a stay of execution. Washington and Buffalo are tied in points but the Sabres have a game in hand. The puck is on their ice.

The Wizards managed to keep their game close, but fell victim to “missed free throws, bad passes and poorer shots.” It’s not much different than what we’ve seen all season, but at least they’re coming closer to figuring out how to win. Or at least how to not lose so badly.

BECAUSE YOU DON’T READ THE PAPER...
* Dale Hunter talked about what last night’s win felt like. “This is the heat, everybody likes playing in the heat,” Coach Dale Hunter said. “Like I keep saying, that’s what it is in playoffs — team comes back late in a game, forces overtime and you never know what happens. You always say that team [that comes back] has momentum to win the game, but sometimes it doesn’t turn out that way.” Nice sentiment, but it isn’t the playoffs just yet.

* Randy Wittman got all spiffed up before Thursday night’s game. “Wittman was feeling good being back in his home town on Thursday night, and even got a haircut to look nice for a dinner with his parents the night before.”

* Looks like Henry Rodriguez is going to be fun to watch.

* Ten years later, we’re still clinging to Maryland’s NCAA ’02 Championship. Where are they now?
