Morning pixels: Harper loses All-Star vote, but not for lack of effort

Bryce Harper did not win the final fan vote for the MLB All-Star Game, but it wasn’t for lack of effort.

Local athletes begged for support using social media. There were video messages and buttons. A Twitter campaign that took over your timeline for four hours and had #BryceIn12 trending worldwide, if only for a moment.

Business Insider used the headline “The Fans Didn’t Want Bryce Harper in the All-Star Game” to announce the results, but that certainly wasn’t true. At least not in the DMV.

Despite the loss, Harper said he has many more years of all-star potential and he’s okay with missing out this year.

“Rest would not be a bad thing,” Harper said after Thursday’s game. “I think going home for five days and seeing the family and really trying to enjoy myself at home I think is really gonna calm me down.”

Just don’t calm down too much. There’s a half-season left of winning to do.

BECAUSE YOU DON’T READ THE PAPER . . .
* Even though they trailed by three runs in the seventh inning, Bryce Harper predicted a Nats win over the Giants. He was right.

* The Terps need a baseball coach, someone who “has a history of doing something with not a whole lot.”

* Boz speaks out in support of Stephen Strasburg’s inning limit.

“I doubt that there was too many doubts about what kind of club we had at this point in the season. But they know now not to doubt us.”

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT II

Adam LaRoche, on his game-winning hustle to first:

“I was running as fast as I can, which isn’t very fast.”

PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE
This guy’s conversation with his 12-year-old self is 20 years in the making. It’s a brilliantly done video and worth the four minute of your time. Mild profanity warning.

WOW VIDEO OF THE DAY
This video of a grounds crew trying to save an infield during a violent storm is pretty dramatic. Hats off to the Tennessee Smokies grounds crew. Via Big League Stew.
