Morning pixels: RGIII responds to Osi Umenyiora

When we pointed out that Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora had called out Robert Griffin III, claiming that he hasn’t earned his nickname, it started a firestorm of press. It ended up on Pro Football Talk, Yahoo, CBS, NBC and NFL.com, among other outlets. According to DCSportsNexus, it was the center of a fill-in-the-blank-game on PTI.

His news conference last night, which was merely set up to discuss the start of training camp, was broadcast on every local news station, multiple radio stations (except one, but more on that later) as well as the NFL Network and ESPN. Camps are starting across the NFL, and RGIII is still the hottest topic in football.

Did Andrew Luck have a news conference? If he did, we didn’t hear about it, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

I knew someone would ask RGIII for his response to Osi’s comments during his presser. I also knew that the response would be nothing less than perfect.

“That’s Osi for you,” Griffin said, as if the two go way back. “One of my coaches at Baylor called me Bob. Nobody really calls me Bob, but if that’s what he wants to call me, that’s fine. He doesn’t have to call me RGIII at all.”

Of course it’s all just training camp trash talk — or simply talk if you’re RGIII — but the first utterings of division rivalry is giving this Bogger goosebumps. The first cross-team jabbering means the beginning of competition.

Let the games begin.

BECAUSE YOU DON’T READ THE PAPER...
* The Nats dismantled the Mets and Strasburg had what may have been his best start of the season.

* Jason Reid says that Griffin give the Redskins a chance at a fresh start.

* RGIII’s news conference was full of perfect answers

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT
RGIII, denying that he’s the face of the Redskins franchise:

“There really is no true face of the franchise, because if we just had faces, we’d all be dead. You’ve gotta have a heart, some legs, some skin. That’s those guys in there. I’m just the mask. Those guys are the body of the real team.”

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT II

Michael Morse on the team’s Natitude:

“We know we’re good. That’s what it comes down to. Why not play with a little confidence, a little swagger?”
