Morning pixels: The marketing seams are starting to show

There’s a lot of marketing and public relations in sports. The best publicists and agents stay out of sight, pulling their strings from behind the curtain like the Wizard of Oz.

But lately we’ve been getting an unintended peek behind the curtain.

Dan pointed it out a few weeks ago when he noticed that all of the local athletes were tweeting identical messages about voting for Bryce Harper in the All-Star final vote. Last night, DeSean Jackson accidentally exposed a publicist’s Twitter request by tweeting the actual request verbatim. A list of athletes offering identical tweets followed — although most of them remembered to remove the request before tweeting.

It’s not just an issue of lazy tweeting. Robert Griffin III has done a host of interviews, set up by sponsors who clearly had a heavy hand in the interview content. The result is a bunch of conversations that all sound the same.

There is no question that athletes have an obligation to their sponsors to make sure they get mentioned in the media, and we all know that publicists work their relationships for press. But the best ones can do it with that curtain tightly closed.

Kevin Durant, when asked if it bothers him to be Olympic teammates with LeBron James:
