Peyton Manning on Mike Shanahan

If I’m going to quote everyone else speculating about a possible marriage between Peyton Manning and Mike Shanahan, might as well quote them talking about each other.

Here, via the Denver Post almost exactly three years ago, is Manning on Shanahan:

“I would be hard-pressed to find a better offensive mind that Mike Shanahan,” Manning said then. “I had him [during the Pro Bowl], and that was a special week. They fired Phil Fulmer in Tennessee and, you know, just be careful. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Now Coach Dungy retired. But I think there’s a lot of good football coaches out there, and I think Mike Shanahan is one of the best of them.”

And here, after the 2004 MVP vote, is Mike Shanahan on Peyton Manning.

“If for some reason he didn’t win it, it would be the biggest disjustice I’d have ever seen,” Shanahan said then. “To see that type of passing efficiency, touchdown-to-interception ratio, completion percentage, it’s one of the best years I’ve ever seen.”

“You never stop that guy,” Shanahan said during the next preseason. “Very few teams stop him.”

“He amazes me,” Shanahan said in 2006. “Just his leadership qualities, and his sense of urgency, the way he reads defenses.

“I don’t think there’s another quarterback, especially in today’s era, who can run an offense like Peyton does, where he’s in charge of the checkoffs and protection,” Shanahan said in 2007. “He’s got complete freedom.”
