Randy Wittman on JaVale McGee’s goaltending

The latest JaVale McGee weirdlite came Wednesday night, when the future of the NBA volleyball-served a looping floater into the stands just before it touched rim.

McGee was almost immediately benched, which led some — including me — to assume he had been benched for volleyball-serving a looping floater into the stands just before it touched rim.

Not so.

“There was JaVale McGee with the goaltend, that you yanked him out of the game....” someone attempted to ask Coach Randy Wittman after the game.

“It wasn’t the goaltend,” Wittman said. “What led to the goaltend?” he then asked the media.

Someone said something about a floater.

“What led to the goaltend?” Wittman repeated. “What was he supposed to be doing? That’s the thing people don’t understand. It’s hard to explain, ok? What his job in the pick-and-roll is, is not to let the guard get to the rim. Goaltending? That had nothing to do with it, ok? Nothing to do with it.”
