Sitting Next to Jerry Palm

Not to brag, but it's hard to beat courtside at Madison Square Garden with a seat directly next to Jerry Palm three days before Selection Sunday. Here are his Atlantic 11 thoughts. (And you can read his live blogging here.)

Mount St. Mary's: Will be in the play-in game unless they're saved by the Northeast Conference having sent a team to Dayton in 2006. But expect MSM against the SWAC in that game.

Georgetown: Will be a "high 2" if they win the Big East, and no better than a 3 if they lose today.

Maryland: "They've beaten a very good team already; they have to do more of that. They can't be a one-hit wonder on Selection Sunday."

Virginia Tech: "They need to beat a good team. However many games it takes them to beat someone good. That's the big hole in their resume. Miami would count. That fills the hole, but it may not be enough. That, though, covers the one thing that's really missing." But if teams like Kent State go out, the Hokies might need more.

VCU: "Things are not going well for VCU. They needed South Alabama to win, they needed San Diego to go out. The [CAA] is down from where it's been, and they don't have a quality win of their own. If the bottom of the bracket were bigger, there might be room for them. But I don't know how you take them." [Sigh.]

George Mason: Could be a 13 or 14, depending on what other teams do and geographic concerns.

American: Currently slotted as his top 16 seed, could go up as high as 14 or 15.

UMBC: Currently slotted as a 15.
