Excuse me a brief moment of self-indulgence.
So I'm sitting in the team handball venue, talking to some young American-ish sports fans who confirmed the dominance of sports blogs among a certain set.
John Tang is the CEO of imyty Fantaxi, China's first fantasy sports Web site. How's fantasy sports going in China?
"My biggest problem is education," John told me. "No one knows what [fantasy sports] is. Such a better sports culture in the States."
He's from Beijing but went to UCLA, where he met Trevor Gribble, who was also watching the Hungarian handball team at the time. John reads sports blog True Hoop religiously. Trevor writes about UCLA for sports blog Deadspin, when the need arises. When he found out who I worked for, literally the first thing he asked me was whether I knew ex-Post staffer Michael Tunison, who writes for sports blogs Kissing Suzy Kolber and With Leather.
Anyhow, I figured maybe two sports blog reading American-ish kids might possibly have heard of the D.C. Sports Bog, so I gave up on the modesty thing and asked, and suddenly a light went on for John.
"The guy who does all the stuff about DeShawn Stevenson's beard!" he said. "I definitely think the Wizards' locker room is one of the most interesting to cover."
No arguments here. And yeah, to repeat for emphasis, this was someone I'd never met, at the Hungary-Sweden women's handball match, in Beijing, discussing DeShawn Stevenson's beard.
