The Bryce Harper Ultimate Warrior look revolutionized high schoolers’ use of eye black. Baseball players, softball players, water boys, third base coaches — everyone wanted those crazy black markings on the entire length of their cheek.
Might St. John’s pitcher Bobby Boyd have a similar effect on the world with his eye black mustache? Too soon to say. But he helped the Cadets win their first WCAC baseball title in six years, and he looked pretty damn...something...while doing it.
Just to make sure I wasn’t seeing things, I called St. John’s Coach Mark Gibbs to ask whether Boyd wore an eye black mustache during the decisive game.
“Uh, yeah,” Gibbs told me. “Yeah, he did. He did.”
And it turns out this wasn’t the mustache’s first rodeo. Boyd busted out the black on senior day against Bishop Ireton, and re-applied it a few times during the season’s stretch run, just to lighten the mood in the dugout.
“Let the kids do something different,” Gibbs said. “I thought it wa s pretty funny, anyhow.”
Agreed. Oh, and as DeMatha’s Luke Higgins demonstrated, the Harper look isn’t dead yet, either.
Here’s Harper’s current look, by the way.
