“I already told him I’d like to have somebody with a big, hairy chest sitting next to me,” Davey Johnson said of Mike Rizzo before Friday night’s game.
The implication was that Johnson wanted a big power-hitting type on his bench. Either that, or he likes bears.
Regardless, if I had to guess, I’d probably put money on Matt Stairs having the hairiest chest on the current lineup, which is why it was so fitting that Stairs would wind up as the walk-off hero Friday night.
These being the 2011 Nats, the post-game celebration was suitably merry. If you don’t mind, I’d like to highlight the merriment, in four parts.
1. The mob scene at first base, in which Stairs was hugged, fondled, cuddled and jumped on, repeatedly. Plus, there was at least one aggressive pat on the behind. Baseball mob scenes are the best.
2. The post-game handshake line, in which it became evident that Davey Johnson sort of smiles like Mike Shanahan. This is also a broader smile than I remember seeing from Jim Riggleman during any of the walk-off parties.
3. The Debbi Taylor-Matt Stairs interview, in which Stairs received a bucket of wrapped bubble gum over his head. A few of the pieces actually remained on Stairs’s cap, and later in the interview he grabbed them and tossed them to someone off-camera.
4. The Jerry Hairston shaving cream attack. This confused me, because Hairston is out for a month with a broken wrist, but I guess he’s good to go on shaving cream pies. The attack also led Debbi Taylor to cancel the rest of her interview.
