The DC Bowl Committee announced a new social media campaign for the Military Bowl last week, spearheaded by SGT Stripes, a newly created football character.
The SGT, the release explained, “will interact with fans through its own Twitter account, pop up at landmarks throughout the region and pose with local celebrities as a way to engage fans in the game. SGT Stripes will also be featured on the Military Bowl’s Facebook page. He will provide video updates of his whereabouts “as he travels throughout the Baltimore-Washington region and beyond,” and will also post “pictures of his excursions, interactions with celebrities, and a ‘Where has your football been today?’ contest.”
The nickname was chosen from more than 300 potential names submitted by employees of Northrop Grumman, the game’s title sponsor.Wake Louis, a mechanical engineer in California, submitted the winning name and will receive tickets to the Dec. 28 game.
The SGT, meanwhile, has plans to Tweet during the game itself.
