Virginia Tech fan protests Hokies’ exclusion

During the first media timeout at the Old Dominion-Butler game, I noticed a man in Virginia Tech colors waving signs with the Virginia Tech logo. That seemed worth investigating.

“I was hoping Gene Smith would see my signs,’ said Bryan Deege, the fan in question, referring to the chairman of the NCAA tournament selection committee.

Deege got free tickets to the Verizon Center session — great tickets, I should add — and he figured it was his responsibility as a Tech fan to state his case. The gentlemen sitting in front of Deege were most interested in the fact that he perhaps misspelled leprechaun, but I suppose that’s tangential to the main point.

“We’re all so pissed about missing the tournament,” Deege told me. “Four years in a row. We’ve been overlooked four years in a row. It’s been tough, getting First Four Out four years in a row when teams like VCU and UAB get in with no right whatsoever.”
