Stephen Strasburg’s coy interview about the playoffs

Stephen Strasburg chose the occasion of the Nationals’ first division title to mess with a national television audience, break out several huge smiles, and lead on a couple of MLB Network analysts with a couple of extremely coy answers.

Unless he was being serious here. In which case, well, you got me. Watch the video and decide for yourself.

“Stephen, it’s Mitch,” MLB Network analyst Mitch Williams said late on Monday night, as the Nats celebration raged on. “And I’ve got to ask you, you’re a huge part of this team — is there any covert operations going on where you may pitch in the postseason?”

“Uh, you know, we’ll have to wait and see,” Strasburg said, without really breaking character. “I’ve been playing catch and everything. But I think this team is very, very capable of taking it all the way.”

He still wasn’t really cracking up or anything.

“Ahhhhh, I’m not buying it, I see a little SMIRK there,” Harold Reynolds interrupted, and here Strasburg finally busted into a huge smile. “I’m telling you, we’ve been kind of watching, we’re hoping,” Reynolds continued. “I know it’s got to be kind of bittersweet if you don’t pitch in the postseason. I just know you too well, man, you’re too competitive. I don’t know, I’m not buying it. Am I on to something? C’mon Stephen, let me know, am I on to something?”

“Well, all I can say is it’s pretty tough,” Strasburg answered. “But times like these, it just makes it all the better. It was awesome to be able to witness this and experience it, and I know we’re going on to bigger and better things.”

“Very good, good job Stephen, good job,” Reynolds said. “That was good.”

“Now I want to know, are you going to hit in the postseason?” host Greg Amsinger chimed in.

“You know, they keep me swinging, so we’ll see,” Strasburg said. “Hopefully I can face a lefty or something, because I don’t hit too well against righties. But we’ve got guys on the bench too, the Goon Squad, they’ve stepped up all year.”

And so on. I don’t think I can deal with another round of Strasburg Shutdown stories, so let’s just congratulate him for making some jokes and move on.
