Morning Pixels: Teddy won; let’s get back to baseball

October 4, 2012

In talking to some of the Nats players yesterday, there was a clear underlying feeling of disbelief at the notion that a mascot race had become so important to fans. On the week that the team clinched the division and the very day that they walked away with the best record in the league, fans seemed to care more about one storied loser than 33 celebrated winners.

“It looks like they might like the Presidents Race more than us,” joked Ryan Mattheus, when I asked him about the fan reaction to Teddy’s win. He was kidding, but there was a hint of seriousness in what he said.

Last night Miguel Cabrera made history by becoming the first player since 1967 to win baseball’s Triple Crown, leading the American league in batting average, home runs, and RBIs. According to the folks at ESPN, not even that was enough to steal Teddy’s glory. Early airings of SportsCenter’s Top 10 list had Cabrera’s feat listed at No. 2. Teddy took No. 1.

This was corrected in later editions that rightfully moved Cabrera to No. 1, but the statement had already been made. When did silly gimmicks start to trump athletic prowess? When I asked Stephen Strasburg yesterday if we were all taking the mascot race a little to seriously, he replied, “Perhaps,” not wanting to be a wet blanket, but recognizing that Teddy and his losing streak had become a bit of a distraction.

It’s a distraction that is no more, and the decision to put an end to it was a good one. There is some really good baseball happening here in Washington. Like Strasburg implied yesterday, that should be the main event.

TWEET OF THE NIGHT

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT
Edwin Jackson on the team’s approach to winning:

“It’s just a matter of how you approach it. If you come out expecting to win games rather than hoping to win games, then you win games. You don’t hope. You take the field knowing that you’re going to beat every team you’re playing.”

HIGHLIGHT OF THE NIGHT
Teddy winning. Duh.
