I’m not sure if I’ve ever gone to a sporting event as a paying customer strictly to get the promotional giveaway item, but for this I’d consider it. The Wizards have scheduled a 1978 NBA title replica ring giveaway for their April 6 game against the Pacers.
I don’t know what exactly you do with a replica NBA championship ring — wear it, I guess — but that sure sounds like something you’d want sitting on your shelf of Wizards keepsakes. The ring, of course, will commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Bullets’ title season.
Here’s a passage from a 1978 Paul Attner story on the Bullets’ title season, focused on Wes Unseld:
Later, on the flight home, he talked about the achievement. He finally looked at the finger that eventually will wear the championship ring.
“How do you insure the ring?” he asked.
“You can buy a policy,” he was told.
“That won’t do it,” he said. “Insurance can’t ever replace the 10 years of memories that ring will hold. Nothing can. Nothing.”
Other scheduled giveaways this season: a scarf for the Dec. 22 game against Detroit, a Bradley Beal bobblehead for the New Year’s Day game against Dallas, a tin lunch box for the March 16 game against Phoenix, and a team poster for the April. 12 game against the Sixers.
More promotions might yet be announced. None will top the replica ring.
