The Nationals are still in negotiations with Davey Johnson to bring him back as the team’s manager next season. But while Mike Rizzo and company are hammering out a deal, Johnson is cool as a cucumber.
“I know he was in a fishing tournament,” Rizzo told Adam Kilgore. “And he won the damn tournament.”
Sure enough, Johnson competed in the Redbone tournament in Islamorada, Fla., and was named celebrity grand champion. According to the Florida Sportsman, his title was earned after he “released three redfish on artificial and one bonefish on bait.”
I’m not an angler, so I’m going to assume all of those are impressive things. Obviously, Johnson is good at everything.
Johnson was fishing when he got the call to take over for Jim Riggleman, after the former manager left mid-season in 2011. He also has talked about his hobby of acrobatic flying, so let’s hope he sticks to fishing for now.
In other boat news, Gio Gonzalez and Michael Morse are also spending the next few months in Florida and have been tweeting pics of their adventures on the water. Baseball players have the best offseasons.
