Morning Pixels: Poor Randy Wittman

November 14, 2012

There are at least two quick ways to describe the early-season frustration of Randy Wittman and his 0-6 Wizards.

1) Words

“I’m sure you’re also not pleased with 31 threes, the way you all were shooting?” our Michael Lee asked Wittman after the game.

“We just play, with no concept of rhyme or reason, understanding what’s going on, the concept of the game,” Wittman said. “You’re right. Now, we did get to the line 32 times tonight, which feels like 100 for us. But yeah. We don’t play the game well at times as a unit.”

“In terms of trying to do everything on your own, we don’t have a player on our team that we can do that with,” Wittman also said. “And until we realize that, and until we play with a little bit more sense of urgency, and draw and kick, helping each other get a shot, we’re gonna have lapses like this. We’ve had lapses like this every game….And that’s something that’s got to change. I’ve got to find the right guys that’ll do the right things.”

2) A Picture

If words aren’t your thing, check out Wittman’s face as the end of that game neared. He doesn’t look super happy. Also not super happy: John Wall. Check out this GIF.

BECAUSE YOU DON’T READ THE PAPER

* Davey Johnson, NL manager of the year.

 * Lee on the Wizards: “They lost their way, during a game that Coach Randy Wittman described as ‘mystifying’ and forward Trevor Booker said was embarrassing.’”

* D.C. United is ‘very optimistic’ that 2011 MVP Dwayne De Rosario can play a bit on Sunday.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT

Johnson, on his manager of the year award:

“ There’s two ways I could have got fired,” Johnson said Tuesday night. “One, if I don’t win the pennant. Two, if I win manager of the year. I can relax until spring. I haven’t got any immediate calls from the ownership that they don’t want me back.”

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT II

Johnson, to 106.7 The Fan, on his big offseason plans:

“ Fellas, my wife has got me going to Africa in January. I’m gonna try not to get eaten by a lion.”

WHAT TO WATCH TODAY

The Wizards are in Dallas at 8:30 on Comcast SportsNet. Georgetown hosts Liberty at 7 on MASN. The U.S. men’s soccer team plays Russia at 9:50 on ESPN2. All TV/Radio listings are here.

MIKE SHANAHAN’S WALLET

According to a report in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Mike Shanahan reported “that $3,700 and his passport were missing from a leather briefcase that was left unsecured in an open locker during the game” in Pittsburgh. He later found the goods in another bag. If this is true, why would an NFL coach need $3,700 in cash and a passport for a trip to Pittsburgh?

SPINGARN CLOSING?

Spingarn High, which has one of the most amazing basketball legacies of any public high school in the country, is on the list of potential DCPS school closures. Brian McNally takes a look at the school’s hoops history.

BROADWELL IN D.C.

Hey, Paula Broadwell is reportedly hanging out in Mt. Pleasant this week! Party at the Raven! Although a British site decided that she has “taken refuge at her brother’s house in the Petworth suburb of Washington D.C.” Not Petworth, which isn’t a suburb, but other than that, cool report.

AMAZING RESTAURANT REVIEW

The New York Times’s scathing review of Guy Fieri’s new Times Square eatery will make you run around your office, thrusting your fist in the air and rejoicing at a newspaper speaking truth to power. Or at least you’ll chuckle.
