Kevin Durant’s new shoe inspired by Mumbo Sauce

December 12, 2012

Kevin Durant’s new DMV-inspired sneaker, the Nike KD V, hits stores this month. The shoe’s catchiest color scheme — described as “bright crimson” — will be in stores this coming Saturday.

And that color apparently has the best inspiration of all time.

“Inspired by the popular DC Mumbo sauce, this season’s debut special edition colorway of the KD V sports a full bright crimson upper,” Sole Collector wrote.

The shoe “pays tribute to the greater Washington DC/Maryland/Virginia area, with the bright crimson splashed across the upper-an apparent tribute to favorite condiment of the area mambo sauce,” Sneaker News wrote.

“My fav color of the KDV’s are the DC/Seat Pleasant Mumbo sauce joints,” Durant himself wrote on Twitter last month.

Nike’s product description mentions neither mumbo sauce nor mambo sauce, but does detail some of the local touches, including the Maryland area code, a “Seat Pleasant’s finest” inscription, and his parents’ initials. Others have said the shoe’s color is a nod to the Maryland state flag, having nothing to do with takeout chicken.

The shoe’s lead designer, Leo Chang, recently talked to ESPN.com about the sneaker, and he didn’t mention any condiments, either. Chang did say that the pentagon shapes splashed all over the shoe paid tribute to Durant’s Olympics uniform number, and the KD V thing, and the D.C. architectural icon.

But until someone tells me otherwise, I’m assuming this is the first Mambo/Mumbo Sauce-inspired sneaker in world history.
