Kirk Cousins talks to John Boehner about the fiscal cliff

December 20, 2012

Hey look, it’s Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins and his new haircut posing with Speaker of the House John Boehner.

Wait, what?

Okay, turns out that Cousins and Rep. Bill Huizenga (R – Mich., on the far left in this picture) both went to Holland Christian Schools, which is in Huizenga’s Congressional district. Their relationship precedes Cousins being drafted by the Redskins, but they’ve grown closer since he relocated to Washington. They exchange text messages, for example, and Cousins has previously visited Huizenga on the Hill.

Cousins told Huizenga he was around this week, according to a Huizenga spokesman, and the Representative then invited him and his friends to the Hill. They swung by the Speaker’s office, and Boehner happened to be there, leading to these images.

“They talked about football, and Kirk asked a couple questions about the fiscal cliff,” the spokesman said. “This isn’t the first time they’ve talked on Capitol Hill.”

Huizenga has even extolled Cousins in past interviews with this very publication.

“It gets complicated for me,” he told my colleague Nia-Malika Henderson over the summer, when asked if he’s a Michigan or Michigan State fan. “I grew up a Michigan fan, but Kirk Cousins – who is one of the new quarterbacks for the Redskins, right behind RGIII – went to my high school, he played at Michigan State….Still, kind of in my heart I’m a Michigan fan, a football fan especially, but they’re both great schools.”
