Frank Herzog on Redskins-Cowboys

Because this feels like an old-school Redskins-Cowboys game, Boz is dropping the names of Eddie LeBaron, Tom Landry, Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, Don Meredith, Craig Morton and Danny White in his column, and Dexter Manley is saying nutso stuff, and WTOP is playing at least one classic Frank Herzog clip.

The station intro’d its Herzog interview this week with an audio file from the 1983 NFC title game, and then asked the longtime Voice of the Redskins about that game.

“There was some concern in the booth that we might go tumbling down into the crowd at one point at RFK,” he joked. “You know, it’s interesting, that game — and the crowd response — was one of the factors in Jack Kent Cooke building FedEx Field. And he told the builders there he wanted the same acoustics, if not better than RFK, because he wanted the noise. The only thing was, he could never produce a winning football team, and so there was no reason to cheer. So Sunday night may be the first game in which Redskins fans REALLY have a chance and a reason to be a factor in a football game.”

If it’s not the first, it’s certainly on a short list. Which is why Herzog said he’d like to be in the building.

“It’s gonna be a lot of fun,” he told WTOP. “I told my wife the other day, this might be a game that I’d like to go to. I’d like to be there for the atmosphere, for the tension before the game that you can feel. It’s palpable on the football field. It’s gonna be a great experience, and I think [fans are] gonna have a lot of fun, and I think the Redskins are gonna have a lot of fun as well.”

Herzog also offered a brief forecast of what to expect on the field.

“The biggest factors for the Redskins on Sunday night are to help that defense out by keeping them off the field, and keeping the Dallas Cowboys offense off the field,” he said. “And I think that’s where you’re gonna see a throwback, to run the football. This has been a year where we’ve seen passing setting up the run. In this case, of the 32 teams in the National Football League, the Cowboys are ranked 31st in run defense. I think Mike Shanahan and the Redskins come out running the ball right down their throats to set up the pass, and to set up that field-goal kicker. Remember, season-finale games, there have been eight of ‘em with the Cowboys and the Redskins. The Cowboys have NEVER won in Washington. They’re 0-5 in season-ending games.”

Anyhow, click the link to hear Herzog’s call of Darryl Grant’s iconic touchdown. Here, by the way, is what Joe Gibbs said after that game.

“I haven’t even thought about the Super Bowl,” he said. “This is our Super Bowl, this was everything rolled into one. The Redskins versus Dallas, the team we wanted to beat the most. How can you top that?”
