Morning Pixels: ‘Hail to the Eagles?’

January 2, 2013

This is how you know everything is coming up burgundy and gold: when the outgoing longtime coach of one of your most bitter rivals decides to co-opt your iconic catchphrase.

“Sometimes change is good,” Andy Reid told Eagles team employees last week, as seen in this video. “And I know Jeffrey [Lurie] does nothing that isn’t best for the organization. So I know the next guy that comes in will be phenomenal. The ultimate goal is the Super Bowl, right? So to everybody in this room, I wish you a big ring on that finger in the near future. And then, Hail to the Eagles, baby.”

I mean, Hail to the Eagles? Has anyone ever said that before? Wait, let’s go to the team message board.

“Why did he say Hail to the Eagles?” one fan asked. “Best of luck to you and your family Andy, but really, Hail to the Eagles?”

I’m telling you. Everything is coming up burgundy and gold.

* Tracee Hamilton on the young Skins: “They have their early ’90s swagger back. Maybe they are the Redskins of auld after all.”

* Liz Clarke on the fans: At St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Southeast Washington, the testifying began hours before Sunday’s 8:30 p.m. kickoff, when the choir and congregation burst into “Hail to the Redskins” just after Mass ended.

* New Year, Same Wiz.

“I think that’s the greatest sports franchise in the world, with the greatest fans. Right now everybody is on a high. The coaching staff has done a great job with the offense. I think they’ve got a good chance to beat anybody right now.”

SEATTLE FANS CONFIDENT

Via a Seahawks blog: “I am all for respecting opponents, and the Redskins have had an admirable season, but they do not appear to be in the same class as Seattle….You would struggle to find a credible case for where the Redskins have a significant advantage on the field.

GOT THREE THOUSAND BUCKS?

The Redskins are auctioning off the chance to remove the first and second-half kickoff tees from the field on Sunday. It’s to raise money for charity. Bids start at $3,000.

GARRETT CONFIDENT IN ROMO

“He’s done a lot of great things for this franchise,” the Cowboys coach said of the Cowboys QB. “We’re excited about him being our quarterback.” So are Redskins fans.
