1580 AM to become 24-hour CBS Sports Radio network

January 22, 2013

Not enough sports-talk offerings in this town for your liking? Well, yet another option will soon appear.

What had been WNEW-AM on 1580, covering government and business news, will now become SportsRadio 1580. The new station will run national CBS Sports Radio content 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The station — which will include the shows of Tiki Barber and Dana Jacobson (6-9 a.m.), John Feinstein (9 a.m.-noon), Jim Rome (noon-3 p.m.), Doug Gottlieb (3-6 pm.) and others — will switch to the sports-talk format during Super Bowl week, and will also offer play-by-play coverage of NFL games and college sports.

“106.7 The Fan will continue to serve the Washington, D.C.,” CBS Radio Senior VP Steve Swenson said in a press release. “Sports Radio 1580 AM will offer national insight for those who have broader sports interests. Either way, CBS is the dominant sports voice in the city.”

Love sports-radio press release fights. Nothing better.

The station, incidentally, has a strong signal during daytime hours, but is tough to hear at night. The content will also be streamed online at online at cbsdc.com.
