What’s wrong with the 2013 Capitals? Well, there’s a lot that’s new, and feel free to blame any of the newness. There’s a new coach, a new system, a new second-line center, a bunch of new forwards, new Pepsi products, a new ticketing system, a new security system.

And you know what else is new? The blue socks.

“I noticed something was amiss on TV during the first game, but figured I was just seeing things,” Reader Richard wrote in an e-mail. “On Tuesday, in the home Red, it was more pronounced and I started mentioning it to those around me. Nobody else seemed to notice. I finally confirmed the issue – The Caps have reversed the coloring order of their socks. In the past, the blue segment of the sock covered the knee and thigh and blended in with the blue pants. Now the Blue is on the bottom covering the shin with the red/white segment up top. I’m no fashion expert but I cannot unsee this (especially when they aren’t giving me much more to look at) and it bothers me a lot because I personally like the flow of the old uniform better.”

I suppose that’s just a matter of taste. But as these images show, Richard is clearly correct. We have a sock drama on our hands. And the fans are getting hosed.

(Ok, no one is actually getting hosed. I just wanted to use a “hosed” joke.)
