“I believe that if the Caps can qualify for the playoffs, 10 or 15 years in a row,” Ted Leonsis said in September of 2010. “That with that continuity and that knocking on the door enough, that we’ll get our fair share of Stanley Cups. That’s what I believe and I have to believe….The fan base has confidence, and it’s just a matter of time, I believe, until we win the Cup.”
Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. But the Caps still haven’t won a Cup, and cynical fans have used Leonsis’s words against him when things have gone poorly in recent postseasons.
I couldn’t help but think of this example when Leonsis’s friend and business partner Mark Lerner took a similar approach on Saturday during a meeting with Nats season-ticket holders.
“We’re going to the World Series this year,” Lerner said, according to MASNSports.com’s Pete Kerzel. “I don’t mind the target on our backs. It feels pretty good. I hope we have that feeling every year.”
All this guarantees is that someone will be gloating next October. Maybe it’ll be Lerner, or maybe it’ll be the cynics.
BECAUSE YOU DON’T READ THE PAPER
* New to me: Roger Goodell grew up in D.C., went to John Eaton Elementary, the greatest elementary school in all the land.
* Svrluga on the Caps and Ovechkin: “Fair or not, Sunday felt like a referendum on the entire season, shortened as it may be.”
* John Wall gets the headlines, but Emeka Okafor and Nene have helped spur the Wizards’ resurgence. Ok, fine, technically that means they get the headlines, too.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT
John Erskine on scoring the 12th goal of his 11-year NHL career
“I was gonna unleash the big cannon first and then he got in the lane so I just threw a little muffin and good stuff happens. I wouldn’t say I was surprised. I just threw it at the net and you never know what can happen. It can go off people and in the net. That’s the way goals are going in these days.”

MR. BOH IN WOODBRIDGE
The artist’s rendering of the new P-Nats’ stadium in Woodbridge shows a large image of Mr. Boh, who is not typically associated with Woodbridge. Also, “in center field, there will be a crab shack with steamed crabs, a beer garden, broad plazas and a playground for kids.”
