The Nats relievers have a lot of time on their hands during games, waiting for their call. Sometimes they have to get creative, and Tyler Clippard went on the Sports Fix on ESPN 980 and told a story of one such time-passing activity.
“I just remember a few years ago we had Miguel Batista on the team, and we showed him how to fold up the Bazooka bubble gum wrappers into little airplanes so he could shoot ‘em onto the field,” he said. “And as soon as we showed him that, every day he would shoot five or six of them into the outfield trying to hit the right fielder or left fielder or whoever it was out there. I don’t think he ever accomplished the feat, but we all joined in on the fun and had a lot of competitions out there.
“That was pretty funny. We enjoyed that a lot. More than anything, we enjoyed watching Miguel fold those bubble gum wrappers constantly in the bullpen. We saw them the next day all cut up in the grass because the mower ran over them.”
It’s all fun and games until someone in right field loses an eye.
