Morning Pixels: Dan Grunfeld speaks out against homophobia in sports

February 28, 2013

Athlete Ally, an organization working to end homophobia in sports, announced that  Dan Grunfeld, son of Wizards GM Ernie Grunfeld, has joined the organization.

“This organization is building a movement to end homophobia in sports and that’s an amazing thing to be a part of,” Dan Grunfeld said, via a press release. “We are sending a message that an athlete’s abilities on the court and character as a teammate are the only factors that matter. It’s important to me that I stand up for that simple belief and do my part to help make LGBT athletes feel respected in my sport.”

Grunfeld is currently playing in the Israeli Basketball Super League, but took some time earlier this week to write a piece, titled “From the Inside Out: An Openly Straight Athlete Ponders an Openly Gay Athlete,” for the Huffington Post. An excerpt:

Hopefully, by demonstrating that many athletes (and their fans) would indeed judge an openly gay sportsman by the content of his character and by the quality of his athletic prowess rather than by his sexual orientation, that closeted athlete might be encouraged to take the leap. Then, it might not feel like a free fall. Then, it might feel like people on all sides of the sports world would be ready to catch him.

Athlete Ally says Grunfeld will act as a liaison between his league and the organization.
