Morning pixels: The Nats have a book club

The Nats played Houston on Tuesday, which meant lots of interviews with former third-base coach Bo Porter, which meant at least one fascinating revelation: He is part of an online inspirational book club that many of his former players still belong to. Via the Houston Chronicle:

“Quite a few of those guys are actually on the book club e-mail, so we actually communicate with each other every morning with the book club and there were some responses back….It’s a long list. From Harper to Desmond, Tyler Moore, Lombardozzi, Clippard, Storen, LaRoche. It’s about 23 guys. I would sit here and be naming names for a long time….It started with probably like 20 people and it’s now over 700 people in the book club.”

A 700-person book club, featuring both Bryce Harper and Bo Porter? Add me to the list. Last year they read Tony Dungy’s “Uncommon Life,” and this year they’re on to an unnamed “spiritual-devotional” work. Have to figure they’ll next follow in Oprah’s footsteps and select “The Twelve Tribes of Hattie.”

BECAUSE YOU DON’T READ THE PAPER

* Eric Fehr plays the hero, everyone rejoices, pixels rain down from the skies like non-existent snowflakes.

* Boz says Bryce Harper will be “amazingly good and very soon, probably this season.” Boz is excited.

* Wise on the Terps: “Turgeon is still waiting for all the promising parts to consistently add up to a genuine whole.”

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT

Dan Haren, on throwing two good innings followed by one rocky inning:

“In spring training, if you do good, you feel great. If you do bad, you’re just working on stuff. I was just working on things in the third inning, you know?”

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT, II

Terps Coach Mark Turgeon, to former Washington Times’er Patrick Stevens:

I was reading about Gonzaga and I look and your name’s on it. You’ve gone big-time on me all the sudden. So are you too important to ask the first question anymore?”
