Redskins teammates salute Lorenzo Alexander on his way out

(Ricky Carioti/The Washington Post)

A lot of players come and go in the modern NFL, and often their departure elicits little more reaction from teammates and fans than “tough business” or “thanks for the memories.”

Lorenzo Alexander’s departure for Arizona on Wednesday night was different, especially interesting considering Alexander made his mark on special teams, was a holdover from some of the team’s toughest seasons, and was never exactly a superstar.

Media members obviously loved him for his honesty and candor — he won the annual Skins media good guy award twice — and teammates clearly appreciated his leadership and locker-room presence.

Thus, a huge proportion of Redskins who are active on social media — players from offense, defense and special teams — sent out best wishes and thanks to Alexander on Wednesday upon news of his new contract. These messages, seems to me, hinted at a player who will be missed for more than just his kick coverage prowess.

(Hogs Haven has a nearly identical item, but I came by this honestly.)

(Also, one last time, here he is smashing someone on kick coverage).
